What was the Renaissance Worldview?
Students will determine the most significant changes in worldview brought about by the Renaissance by comparing the implicit worldviews in examples of Medieval and Renaissance creative works; e.g., paintings, sculpture, architecture and music.

Introduction:
As a class, we have discussed the meaning of the word "renaissance.” This word has been used to describe a period of great change in history, the Renaissance. In order to appreciate the changes in this period, we need some understanding of what came before it.

Task:
A museum curator is looking for an intriguing display for the new Alberta Art Museum opening. He has asked you to create a series of displays titled, "Changes in Art Throughout History" and has requested that the first installation explore the differences between Medieval and Renaissance art. Not only does he want you to focus on the differences, but to show how the art reflects the worldviews in each period. You will only be responsible to focus on one specific type of art (ie. sculpture, music, painting, or architecture) showing the reason why there were changes in the art. He will ask your classmates to focus on other types.

Process:
STEP 1: In order to generate ideas and identify necessary steps for the process, you will work on an online notepad with some of your classmates. Please click on the link to the page identified for your group. When you reach the site, you will be prompted to enter your name. Please enter your FIRST NAME ONLY. Some questions you might like to answer are:

How will you accomplish this task?
What are the requirements?
What are the necessary steps for completion?
What forms of art will you examine?

STEP 2:
Gather and organize the information you will need for your project. The following graphic organizer was developed in class. You are welcome to use it to organize your own research.
Organizer -- Changes in Art throughout History.doc (Thanks Sam!)
Here are some other options:
Graphic Organizers.doc
If you create a different organizer, please show your teacher so it can be added to this site.

Resources:
If you find other sites that are useful, please share them by using the discussion tab at the top of the page. REMEMBER: The internet is not the only source for information. You may use your social studies textbook, as well as any of the books available in the library.

The following sites have been compiled by your classmates:
Renaissance and Medieval Art Resources.doc
(online resources)

A great resource:

The following document contains some useful text and page references:
Renaissance and Medieval Art Resources2.doc (book resources)

Museum Submission:
Finally, it's almost time to submit your display to the museum curator. It's important that, after all your work, the curator agrees that your work is the quality that museum-goers have come to expect. It would be terrible if your work was rejected at this point! You want the contract for the next installation as well (word on the street is that they pay for the second display)!

During our class discussion, the following document was created regarding what needs to be included in your display so you can be sure that it will meet the curator's standards.
Museum Display Requirements.doc

Use the following self-reflection document provided to determine whether or not you've met the requirements outlined by the curator:
Museum Display Self Assessment.doc

This is a rubric that has been based on the requirements created by your classmates. If you feel there
are any elements missing or anything that should be changed, please notify your teacher.

Final Display Viewing:

Once your display has been completed, your classmates will have an opportunity to view it before you submit it to the museum curator. You will also get the opportunity to view your classmates displays. When examining your classmates' presentations, you can use this graphic organizer to record information you learn, or you may create another type of graphic organizer.
Medieval vs. Renaissance Europe.doc

After you have finished viewing your classmates' displays, take another trip around the room and decide whether you believe the curator will include each of the displays in the exhibit, "Changes in Art Throughout History: Medieval and Renaissance Art". Indicate the reasons why you believe this, as well as any constructive comments from which you believe your classmate will benefit. You should use the following document to record your ideas:

Exemplars:
This space is reserved for YOUR work!

Here is an example of a Powerpoint display that loops continuously.
It would be very effective if it was set up as a station surrounded by the images to which it refers.
